What is Coaching?

You may be asking what coaching is all about. I discovered the meaning and benefit of life coaching after embarking on a personal development and stress management quest/independent study to find ways to feel less anxious and more joyful more of the time. I was working in an extremely stressful environment–high pressure, fast-paced, many impatient people swirling and complaining around me, and my little ol’ empathic, highly sensitive self didn’t know what to do with herself. I wanted to get away. I wanted an invisible cloak, like the one Harry Potter found! I wanted desperately to feel better. This was no way to work and live my life, I thought.

So I began to look for resources on stress management and started reading about different tips and strategies for relieving chronic stress. I started attending workshops offered at my job that had anything to do with wellness and stress reduction. I heard about one amazing class coming up on stress that was offered by a local life coach named Sherra Grasser. Attending this workshop changed my life. Sherra shared with us how she became a life coach and talked about the training she took in Seattle, which was practically my hometown. I got very excited and felt like this might be my calling. I had always loved helping people but I also love being creative and teaching, so I wanted to learn more about coaching and see if it was right for me.

I define coaching as a supportive, light-shining, eye-opening, self-exploratory process that one takes when they’re either feeling down and out and not sure what to do next in order to feel better–which was how I felt in the pressure cooker job I was in–or when they’re ready to take the next step in their journey to follow and realize their goals and dreams. Both are pretty tough to do when you’re doing it on your own. And if you’re like me, you may have trouble believing in yourself and recognizing your innate gifts. But I’m here to tell you that it’s totally possible to discover your amazing strengths and use them to your favor, so you can feel more joyful and reach your goals.
